Mudavattukal Kilangu Roots – Description
Mudavattukal Kilangu refers to the tuberous root of the Oak Leaf Basket Fern (Drynaria quercifolia), a medicinal forest plant found across South India. Also known as Goat Leg Root, Indian Swallow Root, and Aatukaal Kilangu, it is revered in Siddha and Ayurveda traditions.
These roots are thick, woody, and rugged, resembling the structure of a goat’s leg—hence the name. Traditionally, the roots are dried and used in herbal formulations for bone strengthening, joint pain relief, fracture healing, and improving overall vitality. They are commonly added to soups, decoctions (kashayam), and therapeutic oils.
