The native range of this species is Africa to Arabian Peninsula, W. Himalaya to India. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the desert or dry shrubland biome.Perennial to 40 cm with creeping stolons, often forming extensive mat-like clumps, variable in appearance. Much-branched from base and rooting nodes; base often white and rest of foliage blue-green. Leaves narrow, rough on the upper surface, younger ones flat, older ones  rolled and narrowly pointed. Flowering stems very thin, erect, with 4-6 narrowly-cylindrical equal spikes to 6cm, pointed and very pale, often powdery.
